Guide to Swedish column driving

Police have not authorised convoy driving
Traffic rules must be observed - e.g. when exiting, at traffic lights and signage

Column driving requires discipline, awareness and respect for the common rules. The following guidelines must always be followed to ensure safe and secure driving for all participants.

The pilot (front driver)

  • Has a fixed place at the head of the column.
  • Must know the route 100%.
  • Sets off signposts at every change of direction.

The signpost1) (no. 2 in the row)

  • Set off by the pilot when changing direction.
  • Must be visible and show the direction.
  • May only leave the post when the stern lantern is in sight.
  • Continues at the back of the column just before the stern lantern.

The stern lantern (rear driver)

  • Must be clearly marked (west or similar).
  • Picks up signposts.
  • Helps with engine stops/breakdowns.

Procedures while driving

  • The pilot sets off the signpost.
  • The next driver moves forward as the new no. 2.
  • Everyone keeps min. 50 metres distance.
  • Slow down if the driver behind loses speed.
  • Stop if the driver behind has stopped or is out of sight.
  • The signpost is waiting on the stern lantern.

Error situations

  • The signalling device is not switched off by mistake - Next driver takes over.
  • Engine stop - The column continues, the stern lantern helps. Maybe technical helper or sweep blade?
  • Accident - Everyone stops and provides assistance.
  • Impatient signaller - Must wait for the stern lantern!

Placement in the column

  • The slowest machines (sidecars) can be placed at the front of the column.

Placement on the road

  • Sidecars: Naturally positioned correctly.
  • Solo machine: Ride as if you were in a small car - not in the cycle lane.

Most important rule

  • DISTANCE, DISTANCE, DISTANCE!
  • Min. 50 meters between motorcycles.
  • Allow space for overtaking and oncoming traffic.
1)
The signpost is NOT a traffic official - and must NOT stop other traffic!
